This painting was inspired by a photographer who lived with the Huichol, or Wikarika indigenous people of Mexico. They are known for their isolation in mountain communities, and for the use of peyote in their religion.
This is a night scene of preparations for a ceremony.
The indistinct figures suggest the mystery and hallucinations associated with peyote.
The deep blue of night, the light and shadows cast by the fire, make for an arresting painting as well as a story that provokes your imagination.
Even without the story, the composition, the careful contrast of light and dark, the use of primary colors reds and yellows and blues promote an exciting viewing experience.
The painting was made in the early two thousands and is in excellent condition after twenty odd years.
So there are no surprises, included are photos of the frame's condition. Overall it is in excellent condition, but there are some light scuff marks as shown. The frame is vintage and of high quality. A sign of that is in its construction : note that the corners are nailed, and not held together with diagonal clamps on the back like most new modern frames.
