Amazing walnut carving of a reliquary bust of a saint wearing a laurel crown with an aperture in his chest.
French, early 18th century. A laurel wreath was a symbol of honor and victory but as a religious metaphor it represented the crown of immortality. People would leave requests and prayers in his chest opening.
