Born in New York and educated in Scotland, she was presented to Queen Victoria before pursuing acting, and later rose to international fame as a pioneering interior decorator. Known for her wit, style, and eccentricity, she was among the first women to tint her hair blue, practiced yoga, and famously performed headstands at parties.

Her husband, Sir Charles Mendl, described her as “a remarkable woman… utterly selfish and at the same time irresponsibly generous.”
