This beautifully preserved vintage print, titled “The 9:45 a.m. Accommodation, Stratford, Connecticut,” is a nostalgic celebration of 19th-century American life and transport. Reproduced with courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1940, this print captures a quintessential scene by celebrated artist Edward Lamson Henry, known for his richly detailed depictions of Americana.
Rendered in a realist style with remarkable warmth and clarity, the image shows a bustling train station at mid-morning, where an old steam locomotive (a key part of 19th-century America's infrastructure) waits as townsfolk gather around. The composition teems with life — from horse-drawn carriages to women in white dresses, men tipping hats, and children curiously observing the machinery. The lush autumnal landscape with golden trees, a crisp sky, and distant hills adds depth and charm to the tableau.
The print is mounted under glass in a rectangular brown frame with a subtle decorative edge and paired with a cream mat bordered by a rust-colored inner trim. The overall presentation reflects the historical elegance of the scene while giving it a clean, timeless appeal.
