Printed in Great Britain, designed by the author. The text and colour plates printed by Hunt Barnard and Co Ltd. Monochrome plates printed by Clark and Sherwell, Ltd.
400 Illustrations, many fold-out, and color tipped in plates. The color plates are likely printed in intaglio or lithography, are on different stock, and mounted on pages of a rough tooth, perhaps acid free. They retain excellent color for their almost 60-year age.
Includes the original 8-page advertising circular from the Book of the Month Club in New York, and even a vintage postcard advertising Phaidon.
Author note: “The conception underlying the whole volume is that it should serve the reader as a constant companion to the Michelangelo literature, or, in the case of less patient readers, give them, with the choice and arrangement of illustrations, a coherent idea of the work of one of the most prolific masters of all time.”
