In the Third and Second millennia B.C. the Cycladic Islands in the Aegean were inhabited by a civilization which preceded that of the Minoans in Crete. For the most part, the Cycladic culture belongs to the Bronze Age, but it does have close connections with the preceding Stone Age, from which it inherited the Mediterranean cult of the Mother-Goddess. In comparison with the opulent forms of the best-known of the Neolithic mother-goddesses, the Cycladic idols are distinguished by their severely geometric outlines, lack of plastic modeling and their schematization. At times a nascent naturalism appears to have been suppressed almost intentionally, as in the series of violin-shaped idols. The typical Cycladic figures are more related to relief sculpture than to statues. Their heads are in the shape of large shields, the long necks are rounded, the bodies are upside-down triangles, with the base at the shoulders and the tip at the ankles; their arms are simple crossed lines and breasts, just little dots. The separation of the legs is indicated by a line which does not pierce through the stone. The idols are usually quite small and cut out of white marble. Sometimes facial features were added in paint. The extreme stylization is perhaps more a matter of esthetic choice than the result of limits imposed by the artists' skills, for these figures have been found in toumbs with idols of a much more substantial corporeality."
