This well crafted credenza shows the minimal design intent and master craftsmanship that characterize Chapo's work - known for his use of solid elmwood and a commitment to pure and clean design principles. The asymmetrical form - comprised of eight drawers (seven on a side and one large frontal drawer) and two doors revealing internal shelves. - is balanced by a keen understanding and attention to proportion. Material, form, and function combined with intentful details and master joinery form a unified whole.

Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) was first interested in painting. His encounter with a shipbuilding carpenter in 1947, introduced him to woodworking, and led to architectural studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After traveling throughout Scandanavia and the Americas, he returned to Paris to pursue woodworking - opening a gallery where along his own creations, he displayed the work of other craftsmen such as Isamu Noguchi.
Influenced by the work of Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Frank Lloyd Wright, Chapo combined contemporary design with traditional craftmanship. See less
