Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) was first interested in painting. His encounter with a shipbuilding carpenter in 1947, introduced him to woodworking, and led to architectural studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After traveling throughout Scandinavia and the Americas, he returned to Paris to pursue woodworking - opening a gallery where along his own creations, he displayed the work of other craftsmen such as Isamu Noguchi.
Influenced by the work of Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Frank Lloyd Wright, Chapo combined contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship. See less
