Marmoucha rugs are mountain rugs, woven in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains, originally by a Berber tribe of the same name. These are authentic rugs whose weaving technique differs from their Beni Ouarain cousins with larger than average knots, giving them greater flexibility.
The wool used for a Marmoucha rug is very high quality sheep wool, which is why the colour is so close to white (with pearly reflections). The higher quality of the wool is also why the Marmoucha rug is counted among the softest of all Berber rugs.
Unlike the colourfull Boujaad rugs, the patterns or the Marmoucha are mostly two-toned or, more exceptionally, carried out in muted colour tones. The design itself, however, is very close to the traditional Beni Ouarain and reflects the excellence of Moroccan craftsmanship woven on traditional wooden looms.
