Hand knotted in high-quality wool, at the center of the multi-tonal, textural red field mihrab is an allusion to the ‘evil eye’ enveloped by green, eggplant, and beige yellow symbols including leaves, irises, and goz eye patterns. The lower emphasis of the evil eye, known to ward off malevolence, is uniquely complemented by the piece’s seeming gentility in the wrapping pastel and rich, earthen borders alike, marrying tones of protection with the whimsy of rejuvenating symbolism.
