Duck symbolism is closely connected to water symbolism, which is about mystery, magic, and inspiration. This particular duck decoy closely aligns with those virtues.
Its mystery comes from its origin, but it is not without clues. I discovered the decoy at a local estate sale and at the time it had a hand written note around its neck, "1880 French Duck Decoy". Although I can't say for sure that it is from the late 19th century, the decoy is most definitely primitive. The wood is worn and tell tale ancient worm holes abound on the decoy's bottom. As to the French provenance, there is definite evidence of at least a European beginning. A label affixed to the bottom identifies Michael Davis as the exporter. Mr. Davis was a well respected antiques exporter based in London during the 1970s. I am confident that the decoy is European and most likely French as attributed.
The magic of this incredible decoy is evident. Its diminutive size and folky proportions set this duck apart from a standard decoy. Along with the decoy's size, remnants of original paint decoration reveal a vibrant youth. The decoy's eyes offer signs of original black paint and its wings reveal a bold yellow undercoat with black ticking marks. There is also evidence of green painted tail feathers remaining.
Inspiration comes to me from artifacts. Items made solely by hand stand apart because they are the result of a person's creativity and skill. This primitive duck decoy is inspirational in reminding us of that simple beauty.

Specifically, there is a fracture near the base of the duck's neck. It most probably has been repaired at some time, but blends into the body without being noticeable. The wood also shows worm hole damage primarily to the decoy's base and head. With that said, the worm damage adds to the patina and primitiveness of the duck. It does not take away from its soundness. less
