It isn’t everyday that you find this model of Arthur Umanoff slatted wood and iron modernist chair (with the arched ... moreIt isn’t everyday that you find this model of Arthur Umanoff slatted wood and iron modernist chair (with the arched half circles base brace design), but, when do you find an always been married set of 30 of them? Well, today! This extensive set of 30 chairs were found in the dining room of a small town drive in hamburger joint, the owner’s daughter says that they were there as long as she can remember, they opened in the mid 20th century and closed last year.

These are the table height model, each chair is about 32" high at back, 16.5" wide at seat, seat height 19.5", depth about 17".

These have patina! But they are still for the most part solid. They all have scuffs and scratches and a worn patina, loss of varnish, moderate scattered loss of the black finish on the iron, they have not been refinished in some time, if ever (aside from one that has some varnish drips), but they have been used and cared for and used for many years and it shows. I am deciding to offer these as is so this is an option if you just want to clean them up a bit and leave the patina overall, and leave you the option to refinish them as desired. It’s unrealistic to think they will look brand new, but they could be made far crisper if wanted.

These have some quirks, like replaced and mismatched castor tips. Many of the castors have some damage but are still functional. Only two chairs of the group have some chips, one has chips out of the wood at the corners of the seat front, another has a smaller chip one slat in from the edge on the seat. Otherwise, 3 chairs have slats with tight cracks (one long one) these are solid despite the cracks, another one has a loose crack that needs to be glued/ repaired at a seat front. Out of the 30 chairs, 27 are in good solid condition with moderate patina and wear as described, two are as stated with the chips out of the seat slats (they aren’t the same slats so these two could make one chip free chair) , and another with a crack that will need mending. Three of them have a missing original screw on the back, 6 where the original screws have been replaced on the back with non matching screws. Some of the seats are missing a screw on the underside here and there. All of the mismatched or missing screws should be easy enough to replace with screws that match the originals. These will require some degree of cleaning and polishing, but they are good and solid and have more life left to live! No tags remain, but on many the staple that held them on is still on many of the chairs. A dream for the mid century modern enthusiast entertainer! Condition Recap:
General condition of all chairs, moderate wear, finish loss, patina, scratching and scuffing, some light gouges here and there (some a bit long though), light to moderate loss of the black finish on the iron surfaces. The underside of the seats have staining/ darkening from being mopped down over the years. Some missing screws here and there on the underside of the seats. Chair tips have moderate wear and damage that does not impede use, none of these are original to these chairs, I think originally they just would have been bare or had small black plastic tips. It should be very easy and cheap to replace these tips with something that looks like the original tips instead. But using tips with glides still makes sense to protect the chairs from damage and facilitate easier movement, this is probably part of why they are still going 60 years on even with such heavy use!
