A lovely, antique, Chinese famille rose enamel cylinder vase, converted into a lamp with a storied heritage and provenance. The term famille rose (meaning “pink family”) refers to its primarily pink, white, yellow, and green porcelain glazed enamel palette. Despite having been drilled through to accommodate electrical components, a faintly visible late Qing red signature, 4-character marking on the bottom of the vase signifies its authenticity and heritage.
With a provenance traced back to Mrs. Caroline Dodd Butts Kilbourne’s Floridian estate, a descendant of the Havemeyer family, this lamp carries with it a storied past and an air of prestige. The Havemeyer family famously ran the American Sugar Refining that eventually became Domino’s Sugar company in 1900. One descendant of the Havemeyers, married into the Old Westbury, Long Island branch of the Vanderbilt-Whitney family. Havemeyer’s were significant art patrons, key donors to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, founders of the Shelburne Museum, and well-known collectors of French impressionist art for America. Their legacy extends to New York City politics; Havemeyer Street in Brooklyn is named after the family. This petite lamp is perfect for art connoisseurs & collectors that love a story! As a Curator and Interior Designer, these are the timeless stories and qualities I seek – knowing it will transcend time, always in style, never trendy. A treasured find for collectors and enthusiasts of unique and one-of-a-kind pieces.
