During the second half of the 19th century various personal products, notably tooth powders were sold in china "pots". Initially the china lids of these pots bore the name and advertising of the maker of the product. Eventually the makers chose to portray lithographed designs and scenes as a way to increase sales. Today the lids are highly collectable. This one shows a sailing ship at sea. It is unusual in that it has its original base. Typically one finds only the lids as the bases were only white china and were discarded. See less
