19th Century Country French Two-Tiered Vitrine is a marvel of the furniture maker's art! Hand-crafted from dense, old-growth oak, hand-rolled glass and hand-forged brass, it harks back to an era when traditional artisans passed down techniques and methods from generation to generation, using only what would be considered primitive tools to produce instant family heirlooms designed to last for centuries! Starting at the top, three different tiers of hand-carved molding create the crown, overlooking the bonnet which is lavished with a charming relief carving of a basket bursting with wildflowers and foliage. The upper tier door just underneath has a complementary carved top set upon an arbalette form so named because of its similarity to an archer's bow. The remainder of the door frame is adorned solely with molding, allowing for a large piece of hand-rolled glass to allow viewing of the collectibles, keepsakes or books within, housed on the surface below or one of the two shelves. Framing the door are the rounded corners, fluted and carved with wheat motif, which complements the bordering around the single full-width drawer at the top of the lower section. The drawer is also fitted with a cast brass ring pull, which works well with the figured brass key guards above and below. The lower cabinet door, hung with brass hinges, is also framed by rounded, fluted corners with wheat accents, and is carved with the same treatment as the upper tier door above, with a different iteration on the lower part of the door, and a handsomely bordered raised panel in between. The boldly scrolled apron represents a departure in embellishment with a floral rosette centered over drapery and foliate motifs, leading the eye to the scrolled legs with escargot feet. The lower door opens to reveal a substantial storage area with shelf. Note the back side, fitted with hand-chamfered solid oak panels in the traditional way, which combined with the pegged mortise & tenon joinery throughout, ensures your family will continue to enjoy this gem for generations to come!
