Condition: Very good condition, there is a small loss of paint on the painting (bottom of the image), and the silver thread is tarnished and the gold slightly dulled. The item has long been in the frame and has not been restored.
This rare and striking small picture consists of a painting in gouache, probably on paper and possibly the same paper (or parchment) as can be seen as the mount, of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Mater Dolorosa. The painting is surrounded by a stunning patterned embroidery, incorporating a cross above the painting, mainly in gold and silver thread, most of the thread is spun thread (i.e. the gold and silver is wound around a natural thread core) but some of it is strips of metal, intricately woven and moulded..
The picture is enclosed in a carved and gilded wooden frame which is probably contemporary with it, and would appear to date from the mid 18th century.
The depiction of the Mater Dolorosa is similar to some of the period made in Spain, Portugal and South America, but we are not able to give a definite view of the item's origin.
We have not taken the picture from the frame and have not tested the metals used. less
