Sculpture Sacred Heart of Jesus, School of Olot, pp. S. XX - Girona, Catalonia
Wonderful image of Olot, made in wood-paste, of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is a sculpture typical of the School of Olot, made in the early twentieth century, in the homonymous Spanish town in the province of Girona.
with a canon of elongated proportions, Jesus is presented in this sculpture with a serene and calm face. He has long hair, as well as a beard, a half-open mouth and his eyes are made of vitreous paste. Great sweet and realistic polychrome, which is completed with an openwork crown in gilded metal, with neo-Gothic motifs.his posture, with his arms open showing his chest, emphasizes the same tranquility. Elegant hands with slender and stylized fingers, where the wounds of the nails of the cross can be seen; with the right hand he blesses the world.
She wears a beautiful robe composed of two pieces, tunic and mantle, both golden. While the mantle is entirely smooth and falls over the shoulders, the lower tunic has a rich golden serigraphy of great quality, ornamented with the same neo-Gothic motifs. To achieve this effect, the surface was first incised, which gives a great volume to the representation of the fabric. Then, a layer of fine gold powder was applied, agglutinated with gum arabic, followed by brush decorations. In the center of its chest is the Sacred Heart, crowned and without thorns.
The figure of Jesus is barefoot and on the ball of the world that acts as a pedestal. In a sort of phylactery it is written "In Spain I will reign and with more veneration than elsewhere". It refers to the Great Promise, revealed in an apparition to Bernando de Hoyos, Jesuit priest settled in the city of Valladolid in the eighteenth century, great promoter of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and beatified by the Catholic Church in 2010. This magnificent sculpture is in good condition for its time and use, only a small opening in a fist, barely noticeable in its entirety.
The Sacred Heart itself is an iconography that symbolizes the goodness of God towards his children, through a big heart. It is important to highlight the role of Saint Marguerite d'Alacoque, who had several visions of Jesus - during the years from 1672 to 1675 in France - who spoke to her of this great love and that she should share this message to humanity. In this revelation, Sister Marguerite witnessed the heart surrounded by the flames of love, crowned with thorns and the characteristic wound, accompanied by a cross coming out of its interior. The iconographic evolution of the Sacred Heart as it is understood today is relatively modern. In this sense, the Society of Jesus has had a great importance in its diffusion, especially by including in its pastoral work the veneration of the representation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
