About the artist and work: This publication, beautifully designed by Takaaki Matsumoto, is a comprehensive monograph published on Matsutani's work up to 2013. Exploring the depth of the artist's practice, this volume traces his career from his first encounter with the Gutai group to his early experimentations with printmaking in Paris, culminating in his late graphite works and on-going 'Stream' series, which began in the late 1970s. Meditating in the visual language the artist developed, Matsutani's use of material and form draw upon the entanglement of a life lived between France and Japan.
First inspired by the sensual tactility of vinyl glue, a new plastic material introduced in Japan after the Second World War, Matsutani creates exquisite pooling three-dimensional organic forms that grow and collapse on the surface of the canvas. Developing a methodical, almost meditative approach in his later performance and monochromatic works,
Matsutani then builds his surface through the accumulation of graphite strokes, exploring nuanced sensations awakened by the absence of color.
The book includes rare archival photographs, an interview with the artist, and insightful texts by Midori Nishizawa, Ming Tiampo, and Kate van Houten.

Cancellations
