This is … Read more Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic antique 19th century Pumpkin Pine cobbler's bench. This is one of the nicer benches we’ve encountered in quite some time and are excited to offer this to our clients around the country. The cobbler's bench has a leather seat with a solid plank backrest. The leather is pretty thick and had no problem holding my weight at close to 200 pounds. We found the workbench to be quite comfortable and could see it being a good fit for an itinerant job in the 19th century. The back rail has multiple slots designed to hold the workman’s tools like scissors, chisels, awls, etc. Because the tools are set in the rail they’re safely stored yet close at hand. The top right drawer has a compartmentalized interior which would have been helpful to keep nails and different materials organized. The top right drawer has some pencil script on the bottom panel denoting previous ownership of the bench. We believe it says “William Amsden + A.J Day to Day’s Daughter of the town So Royalston Mass Massachusetts”. Census records show the majority of the Amsden & Day families residing in Massachusetts in the early 19th century. Royalston is just northeast of Athol, and like Athol, Miller’s River was the lifeblood of their community. The workbench measures 48 3/4” wide x 19 1/2” deep x 27” tall. The seat measures 15” wide x 14” deep with a 12 1/2” seat height. See less
