Frankl (1888-1963) shows his capacity to capture the mood and the movement of a country snowstorm. While the scene is quiet it is also alive, with swirling puffs of snow, snow-bent trees, and snow drifts in the forest beyond. The colors of the trees and the snow reflect Frankl’s interest in color. The period frame with elegant details adds to the overall quality of the piece.

The painting was likely done in or near Cooperstown, NY where Frankl spent much time in his middle and later years. He was born in New York City where he became interested in art and drama, and later studied in Paris. On his return to NYC we became known as one of “The Eight,” a group of artists who rebelled against conventional subjects and approaches to painting. He was part of the National Academy of Design as well. Frankl was heavily influenced by the 1913 Armory Show and by Frederick Frieseke, an American Impressionist. He served in WWI, after which he married a woman from Cooperstown and lived there most summers.

Frankl was highly regarded, especially in Upstate New York, for his portraits, paintings of children and nature scenes. This painting was probably done in the late 1930’s or 1940's,
when the Frankls were dividing their time between Cooperstown and NYC.

Dimensions: with frame - 29" x 33" x 1.5"; without frame: 20" x 24" x 1.5".

The painting is in a particularly fine period frame, the color and details of which set off the colors in the painting. We believe the frame is original to the image. There are notations about the size of the painting itself on the back of the frame. See images. less
