This still life represents a yellow background on which we see a multitude of red and greenish apples. Among the pile of apples is a dark straw basket, which holds some fruit inside. Just behind, a curious textile piece with geometric motifs in blue, red and white tones. These forms are associated with the ethnic motifs typical of the peoples of the Russian steppe.
The elements present in this oil painting are very attractive, thanks to the use of a precise drawing and an intense light, resulting in a dreamlike symbolist painting. The treatment of the background with its skillful handling of the brushstrokes, pure tones and juxtaposed forms that create an unrecognizable atmosphere is striking.
Russian Symbolism was a predominant intellectual and artistic movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It represented the Russian branch of the Symbolist movement in European art, and was best known for its contributions to Russian poetry. Symbolism developed after the realist movement had exhausted itself. The era of the great Russian novel had come to an end. Symbolism represented a new artistic strategy, which eschewed the attempt to represent reality in favor of trying to evoke a feeling. Symbolism coincided with the decline of the role of the aristocracy and the rise of urban society.
