Piero Dosi trained at the Art School in Ravenna, where most of the teachers were students of Luigi Varoli, and attended other engraving and design schools in Florence and Milan. Towards the end of the 1960s, he began his career as a figurative but anti-realistic painter who, over time, found a favorite theme in self-portraits. In the 1970s and 1980s, a hyperrealistic approach to figuration prevailed in his work, but the almost photographic renderings of his subjects (portraits and self-portraits) were marred by apparent tears, writing, overlays mimicking the collage technique, and details reminiscent of Francis Bacon's bodily deformations. He then strengthened his relationship with nature and found new vitalistic accents in an original and anti-graceful mix of Futurism, Fauvism, and Divisionism: aspects that would return in his work after an almost abstract, informal, and, at times, even decorative interlude (the 1990s).
