The well-covered terracotta-coral field displays floriated botehs ulternating with erect full flowers. The pattern is seen on rugs from the Caucasus,Serabs and other north Persian weavings. The rug has Heriz area elements including the ( yellow ) 3 leaf clover inner border and the outer dark brown palmette, leaf & vine band.
The rug originates from the greater Hamadan & Malayer area. The colour palette is broad, with terracotta, golden yellow, dark brown, royal blue, caramel, beige and brick red.The boteh pattern was originally a textile design and only later did it become widespread on rugs.On this runner the textile origin of the design is particularly clear. The condition is quite good, with slight wear to the field. The pile has always been medium low,all the better to display the elaborate pattern.Carpets of this period are often in shorter piles which indicate their traditional origin. This antique runner has been cleaned professionally.
