One of the leading soviet artists of the 1920s -'30s. In 1914-1917 he studied at the stroganov art and industrial school, specializing in textile painting. In 1917 he continued his training at the free art workshops with v.v. Kandinsky, v.e. Tatlin and a.a. Morgunov, then at the vkhutemas painting department in moscow, where he studied under a.v. Lentulova, d.p. Shterenberg. In his early work he was fascinated by the ideas of suprematism and constructivism. Later creativity is in line with the traditions of socialist realism.
