In top condition, this 1930's Nichols Chinese mat shows a rich, almost rust, red field with a red central, outlined, four lobed paeony medallion. The central motif sprouts four twisting,3-dimensional leaf chains in green and cream. The corners in the field are fret designs with small, stylized dragon heads.Along the four sides are compound lavender leaf clusters.A plain celadon green border frames the whole.
Many green areas are two-toned speckled to give a more rounded appearance. The weave is heavy and densely packed. The pile is high and of excellent quality wool. The rug is versatile, fits anywhere and is exotic without being obvious about it.This small piece has been cleaned professionally.
