The sculptural bird combines a vivid turquoise-green body and gracefully curved neck with an amber glass beak and dramatic amber pedestal-form base. Applied glass wings, tail feathers and eyes add wonderful character and emphasize the individually handmade construction.

Jordan's Importing Company was an American importer of Italian art glass from the mid-1950s through the early 1970s. Surviving JICO catalogues document a wide assortment of hand-blown Venetian glass animals and birds with closely related sculptural forms, applied decoration and contrasting colored glass.

This bird was acquired together with a coordinating hand-blown Murano glass heron, also believed to have been imported by JICO, which is available separately. The two make a particularly striking complementary pair when displayed together.

Jordan's Importing Company sourced glass from multiple Murano glassworks, and the individual furnace responsible for this example has not yet been identified.
