About the Artist:
James Gale Tyler (1855 -1931) was born in Oswego, New York and is one of America's most well known maritime painters. From an early age, Tyler was fascinated by ships and sea life. In his lifetime, Tyler would paint not only boats (of all variety!), but also seascapes, seamen, and other snippets from coastal life. In time, Tyler became known for his moody and impressionistic style of painting.
Each year from 1900-1930 Tyler traveled to Newport, Rhode Island to paint the America's Cup Race. He also worked as an illustrator with clients each as Harper's and Century and LIterary Digest. Paintings by Tyler such as "Sales & Steam, 1888" and "Twenty miles to windward" have sold through Christie's Auction House for $21,250 and 85,875 GBP respectively.
