Featured is a colorful oil painting on canvas titled "Indian Procession" by listed artist Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), dated circa 1920. This work depicts a nocturnal ceremonial scene comprised of various figures wearing vibrant attires, solemnly aligned and tenuously illuminated possibly by a central pyre. The piece is unsigned and marked with artist’s estate stamp to the verso. This composition is presented in a wooden frame. There are faint sketches on the back, possibly the remains of the artists work. The sight size of the painting measures 38.5 inches wide x 18 inches high.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio. Woven Canvas, Hand-Painted Paint
