French Napoleon III period pareclose mirror with elaborately carved giltwood frame with red oxidation showing through. Decoration includes a central crest carved in high relief flanked by curving acanthus leaves and flowering branches with the inner corners having intricate floral and leaf detailing. The outer frame features a continuous twisted ribbon with the the inner border having "les perles" (beading that resembles a strand of pearls) next to the antique mirror glass. Before mirror glass could be made in large sections, small mirrors were joined together by slender frames to increase the amount of reflection available, offering five different reflections known as a "pareclose" after the architectural term. The center mirror is the largest and is surrounded on all four sides with four separate mirror glasses. All original.
