Vintage Murano Glass Attributed Grey/Black Fumato Bullicante Sommerso Horse Head-Great Condition
The measurements are about 10" H x 10" D x 3" W and it weighs 4.7#
Although there are no markings, I am leaning toward V Nason as the furnace who produced this beauty based on the shape of the mane and face, along with the use of the fumato technique. There are multiple Murano glass groups on Facebook to join and you can see other collectors discussing similarly shaped horses along with other fumato animals.
If you are unfamiliar with the fumato, bullicante, or sommerso techniques used to produce this beautiful sculpture, here is a synopsis:
Starting with the core, the surface of fused glass rods is exposed to smoke from a wood fire and the carbon/ash from it adheres to the surface of the glass (fumato). The entire surface is then later coated again (sommerso) with clear molten glass that has controlled bubbles blown in (bullicante) and then it is shaped into the head, mouth and flowing mane. Wow!
I have only found miniscule flaws, that unless you are really looking & feeling for them....you would likely not notice.
If you zoom in on the final pics, you can see a very small smooth chip where the mane meets the body at the bottom in the clear glass, as well as a scuff spot toward the very bottom. But the base otherwise is still very shiny and clean which is somewhat rare in vintage glass. Please let me know if you have any questions.
