Grand Tour Cabinet Bronze of Silenus Pompeian, 5 3/4" high
early 20th century
The original statue was found in Pompeii on May 2nd 1864 and has since been in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. Copies have been made for educated travelers to Italy since the late 18th century.
Silenus was the companion of Dionysus, the God of Wine from ancient Greece. A great drinker, he is usually portrayed being supported by satyrs or carried on a donkey. Described in literature as the oldest, wisest and most often inebriated of followers, when drunk he was said to posses special knowledge and powers of prophecy.
