Pietà in 1700s Polychrome Terracotta with lacquered and gilded wooden base. This splendid deposition, a fine example of Bolognese plastic art from the 1700s, a circle of Angelo Gabriello Piò (Bologna 1690 - 1770), is striking for the plasticity of the bodies and the softness of the drapery of the clothes; Christ is depicted with perfect anatomy in a composed posture that instills serenity. He is resting on the knees of the Virgin, who, holding his left hand, seems to gaze at the horizon astonished, bewildered. At his feet are the symbols of passion.
The sculptural group was restored by optimally reassembling the breaks it had near the passion symbols: they were re-glued and bound from underneath with patches. Two fingers of Christ's left hand were reconstructed. The polychromy present is original and has been retouched only near the gluing at the base. The sculpture rests on a molded poplar base lacquered in greenish with a gilded profile. It comes from a private collection in Milan. The measurements given are relative to the overall dimensions of the terracotta to which should be added those of the base, which is 5 - 71 x 36 cm. high. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
