1970's "Fishscape" Large Contemporary Framed Abstract Oil Painting by Joanie Highland
The name of the artwork, "Fishscape" deals with symbols of Buddhism. You will often see fishes depicted in Buddhism as one of the 8 Auspicious symbols. Fish symbolize many things across different cultures, mainly harmony, happiness, and loyalty as they have complete freedom of movement in the water/sea. This freedom in the water/sea is especially noted in Tibetan Buddhism and this painting as the sea is often associated with the cycle of Samsara. Samsara is the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth in Hinduism. In Indian philosophical and religious traditions it means the endless ocean we must cross, lifetime after lifetime, to reach that far distant shore, termed in Buddhism Nirvana. Samsara is a Sanskrit word that means (wandering or world) with the connotation of cyclic, circuitous change. It also refers to the concept of cyclicality of all life, death, and rebirth, a fundamental assumption of most Indian religions. Karma and the three gunas determine the course of one's life and future births. The five elements make up the physical body and the world around us. Dharm guides one's actions and decisions, while Maksha is the ultimate goal. Understanding Samsara can help individuals find meaning and purpose in life.
The painting is meant to bring you pure joy and to remind us that the key to a better life is to be present and have peace that we are exactly where we are supposed to be along this spiritual path that leads to freedom from suffering and the permanent inner peace of enlightenment.
This abstract painting is a beautiful impressionistic painting of the sunset and ocean as a "fishscape". Abstract Impressionism describes a way of painting that combines Impressionism’s concerns for light and atmosphere with Abstract Expressionism’s reliance on feeling and gesture. The meditative painting was bought in La Jolla in the 1970's and has just
become available for purchase.
