A very characterful 18th-19th century cast bronze door knocker.
This piece has the classic form of the mythical hippocampus (half horse, half fish) or "seahorse," a creature associated with maritime endeavors and the gods of the sea since ancient Greece. It appears that this piece was originally painted or otherwise repainted early in its life, but this has worn off over the years. The overall appearance is quite characterful, as if the layers of worn metal, aged patina and old paint tell the story of all the visitors who have touched it.
