The basket is beautifully and … Read more Vintage gathering basket hand made by the Yanomami Indians from the Amazon River Basin, Brazil. The basket is beautifully and tightly woven, in a light yellowish brown. It has a long strap attached to it, which was placed over the forehead to carry the basket on one's back. The strap looks like it's made of a long piece of bark. It's threaded through loops at the top of the basket and twisted and knotted on the outside, with most of the strap inside the basket (you could of course eliminate the strap, use it for hanging, or drape it in a different way). The basket has a rounded bottom, not made to sit upright, though it can be weighted or leaned against a wall.

The basket is in good condition, with just a few signs of use (broken loops on the top, small depression in the bottom, darkening in spots, a little white paint). This was purchased in the 1980s in Brazil but is probably older (mid to early 20th century). See less
