Marguerite de backer was born in brussels in 1882 and died in 1968. She is classified as a belgian painter of the neo-impressionist style and completed her academic training at the royal academy of fine arts in brussels. Today, we can only imagine how much more talented a young woman had to be than her male colleagues at the time in order to study at university. However, we can revel in her brushwork and scenic design.
in this work, we are immersed in the living room of a middle-class antwerp family. It has paintings of antwerp city scenes, a beautiful ship model, various metal jugs and pewter plates. A soup bowl stands on the table. There are two chairs around the chest of drawers. Why are there different ones? a dining chair and an armchair. Fresh flowers enliven the static scene and set the colorful accents together with the sails of the various ship images.
