It can hold several thimbles and … Read more This is a rare arts and crafts embroidered thimble holder sometimes called a pipkin. It can hold several thimbles and was a fashionable sewing accessory in the 19th century. It opens by gently squeezing the ends. The inside is lined in pink silk. The pip is covered in pale green faded linen (the bottom isn’t as faded) with silk embroidered designs in pink, soft tan, pale green and black. The dimensions are 7” long, 2.5” deep and 3” tall. Condition is fair with wear to the edges, inside and out. Please see all images. I have not attempted to conserve or restore this piece as it is a rare arts and craft receptacle that is important “as is.”
The name pipkin refers to a three sided container reminiscent of three legged pots used in the Middle Ages. See less
