A nicely framed oil painting by the highly sought after artist George Gardner Symons (1863 - 1930) who was active/lived … more A nicely framed oil painting by the highly sought after artist George Gardner Symons (1863 - 1930) who was active/lived in New York, California, Massachusetts, Illinois, New Jersey. The painting has been titled "Winter in the Foothills of the Berkshires", dates to the late 19th century, and is signed to the lower right.

Dimensions: Frame, 26.75" W x 31.25" H x 1.5" D; Sight 19.75" W x 24.5" H.

Provenance: Stendahl Gallery, Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles; sold in early 1920s

Plein-air painter George Gardener Symons was born in Chicago and studied at the Chicago Art Institute where he became a close, life-long friend of William Wendt. He traveled through Paris, Munich and London before returning to the United States to establish studios in New England and Laguna Beach, California. He is best-known for his winter landscapes of the Berkshire Hills and Gloucester, Massachusetts as well as his work in the California plein-air school.

Symons exhibited widely throughout NYC, California and London his work can be found in the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences; the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Fleischer Museum in Scottsdale, Arizona among others. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, the National Arts Club, the Institute of Arts and Letters, the Lotos, Century, and Salmagundi Clubs. He was also a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Union Internationale des Beaux Arts et des Lettres. less
