This is an original 18th century hand-colored map entitled "An Accurate Map of the Morea Together with the Neighboring Countries … Read more This is an original 18th century hand-colored map entitled "An Accurate Map of the Morea Together with the Neighboring Countries in Greece; also the Islands in the Archipelago and Aegean Seas" by Emanuel Bowen. It was published in 1747 in London in John Harris's "Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca" or "A Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels". This highly detailed and colorful map depicts the Greek mainland and islands, Corfu, and Rhodes in great detail, as well as portions of southern Italy, Macedonia, Albania, Romania and Asia Minor/ Modern-day Turkey. Famous landmarks include: Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Crete and Ephesus in western Turkey, site of one of the largest archeological excavations in the world.
The map is embellished by a decorative title cartouche in the lower left portion of the map, with a distance scale in English miles below and a Compass Rose just above.
This striking, beautifully hand-colored and historically important original 18th century map is printed on laid chain-linked paper with wide margins and a watermark. The sheet measures 10.5" high and 15.75" wide. There is a horizontal fold as issued. There is irregularity of the upper and lower edges of the sheet, which does not involve the map. The map is otherwise in excellent condition. See less
