About the artist: According to the artist himself, infinite love from an early age for reading, books, illustrations, determined the future choice of life and career. Art education EA Kibrik received at the Institute of Fine Art in Odessa (1922-25) and the Leningrad Vhuteine ​​(1925-27). Of decisive importance for the creativity of the young artist was his acquaintance in his student years with the unique artist and teacher P. N. Filonov. Kibrik became his student, in 1926 he entered the collective of the “Masters of Analytical Art” founded by Filonov and performed his first independent work under the strong influence of this artist (illustrations for “Second Lieutenant Kizhe” by Yu. N. Tynyanov, 1930, etc.). In the illustrations of the early 1930s. to the books of modern writers (The Neva Tale by D. M. Lavrukhin, 1933; The Heavy Division by A. G. Lebedenko, 1934, etc.), the artist develops his own energetic and tough style of drawing, which graspingly captures the visible features of the world.

But the determining factor was his work on the book of R. Rollan's "Cola Bruyon" (1934-36). Kibrik is attracted to full-blooded, epic whole characters, he gives his heroes an open, theatrical gesture, active facial expressions, often using professional actors as sitters. He loves a large format that gives scope to natural freedom of movement. The rough, coarse-grained stroke of his lithographs lies densely and juicy on the page of the book. This is how Kibrick builds his next book, The Legend of Ulenspiegel ... by S. de Coster (1937-38). The Great Patriotic War reinforced the artist’s desire for heroic themes and drew his attention to the Russian classics: Taras Bulba by N.V. Gogol (1944-45). Less successful was the attempt to apply the method worked out by the artist to Russian epics ("Heroic Epics", 1948-50), where the fabulous conventions of the characters did not get along well with the desire to dress them with living flesh and place them in real space. The monumental drama and heroism of his best books of the 1930s and 40s. the artist remained faithful in his later works: “How steel was tempered” by N. A. Ostrovsky (1953-56), “Boris Godunov” by A. S. Pushkin (1959-64), “Portrait” by N. V. Gogol (1973- 77). A significant place in the life of Kibrik engaged in teaching. For twenty-five years (1953-78) he was a professor MGHI, led easel graphics.

He studied at the Odessa Art Institute, in particular with P.G. Volokidin, and at the Leningrad Higher Artistic and Technical Institute (Vkhutein, 1925-1927).

In 1927-1930 was one of the most active members of the created P.N. Filonov association "Masters of Analytical Art" (MAI). After the split, the Moscow Aviation Institute until 1931 worked in Izorama (Art Studio of working youth), an organization designed to develop mass amateur performances. During the period of unfolding persecution, Filonov spoke in the Soviet Art newspaper and the Young Proletarian magazine with sharp criticism of his teacher (1932), after which other Filonovs considered him a renegade.

Since 1943 he lived in Moscow.

Created the easel sheets and magazine graphics, but gained fame primarily as a comic book artist. His early illustrations to Lieutenant Kizha Yu.N. Tynianova (1930) completely adhere to the method of "analytical art" - with the characteristic for the latter "revealing" (as if by x-ray highlighting) of the inner life of things and figures. Later he turned to the style of moderate, “academic” Art Nouveau, through which the northern Art Nouveau and symbolism of the early 20th century, which was an early base of Filonov’s art, were quite expressive.

Preferring the technique of drawing with charcoal and pencil, as well as lithography, he combined monumental and epic forms and motifs with the softness of black and white effects. The most significant graphic cycles of Kibrik belong to a series of romantic illustrations to R. Rolland's "Col Brunion" (1934-1936), the Legend of Ulenspiegel S. de Coster (1937-1938), Taras Bulbe N.V. Gogol (1943-1945) and the Russian "Heroic Epics" (1948-1950). In addition, he sought an epic — but already a modern heroic epic — in his historical and revolutionary compositions, which became examples of socialist-realistic graphics (a series of drawings by V.I. Lenin in 1917, 1947, the Central Museum of V.I. Lenin, Gorki; two sheets from this series - “There is such a party!” and “Lenin at Razliv” - were awarded the Stalin Prize 1948). Among his later works, the most famous illustrations for "Boris Godunov" A.S. Pushkin (ink, 1959-1964, Tretyakov Gallery).

Since 1930, he worked actively as a teacher - at the Art Studio of working youth, the Academy of Arts and the Moscow Institute named after V.I. Surikov. Of several of his publications, “autonography” “Work and Thoughts of the Artist” (1984) is of particular interest, where Kibrik returns to the creative impressions of his youth, explaining his break with the Leningrad avant-garde, but at the same time giving a lot of valuable information about the latter.
