About the artist: Petr Alexandrovich Nilus - painter, art critic, fiction writer.

Born on February 20, 1869 in the village of Busheny, Podolsk province. There is very little information about the childhood and youth of Nilus. The family moved to Odessa in 1876, and the next year the boy was sent to the real school of St. Peter and Paul. Since 1882, the then young artist G. Ladyzhensky became a teacher of drawing at the school. On his advice, Nilus left school in the sixth grade and entered the Odessa Drawing School, where G. Ladyzhensky and K. Kostandi were his teachers. In 1889, immediately after graduating from the drawing school, Nilus left for St. Petersburg at the Academy of Arts, but soon left and began to work independently. From 1891 he became an exhibitor, and from 1899 - a member of the Association of Wanderers. Upon returning to Odessa, Nilus was actively involved in the local art life. Since 1893 he is a member of the Association of South Russian Artists, a participant in almost all exhibitions from 1890 to 1919. and one of the authors of the charter of the partnership in 1894. One of the organizers of the Odessa Literary and Artistic Society created in 1897. He took part in the collection “Our Evenings” (1903) published by the society. In 1905, together with A.M. Fedorov published the satirical magazine “Ringing” (published No. 1-2), where he used the pseudonym “Pan” in the captions to the drawings. See less
