An original double sided sewing shop street sign from the fine yarn manufacturer welcomme pernell manufactured by eas plate (alsatian enamelling from strasbourg) in the 1960s in lithographed metal sheet
undoubtedly one of the best known enamel shops and the most dear to collectors who call it eas \. The emaillerie alsacienne de strasbourg was created in 1923 by georges weill .
he bought an old brickworks in hoenheim to use as his enamelling factory.
originally, the factory manufactured all kinds of enameled products such as stove fronts, wood stove pipes and other household items.
in 1926 , the eas began the production of enameled plates .
the company quickly acquired real expertise in this field, notably thanks to lithography which is faster than stencils and very qualitative.
with rapidly growing demand, eas became the first french manufacturer of enameled plates in 1927 .
the second world war saw the dispossession by the germans of the factory which directed its production towards the war industry.
the weil family was able to regain possession of the factory in september 1945.
at the end of the war, the production of enameled plaques was not enough to ensure financial stability; the eas thus took over the production of custom enameling (stoves, cookers, etc.).
the manufacturing process also changed to meet profitability constraints…
lithography , a complex and therefore expensive process, was replaced by screen printing (or stencyl) at the beginning of the 1950s; faster, cheaper, but much less noble.
this process allowed them to stay in the race and follow the trend of painted sheet metal from the 1950s (painted sheet metal baked in the oven).
the eas will also move towards the building sector, notably with the production of facade panels; this production will continue until the end of the company\.
the taxation of advertising in the early 1960s sounded the death knell for advertising production.
the turnover was reduced inexorably until the production of enameled plates was stopped in 1970 .
subsequently, the construction market will also contract and the company will be put into liquidation in 1992.
during its history, the eas produced several hundred tons of enameled plates; more than 6000 different plate models were produced.
