An impressive pair of antique Chinese patinated bronze guardian lion incense burners, modeled as powerful mythical Foo Dogs (Shishi), each cast seated with expressive open jaws, raised forepaws, scrolling manes, prominent horns, and flame-form tails. Their hinged heads lift to reveal hollow interiors intended for burning incense, combining sculptural artistry with practical function.

Each figure is richly decorated with finely chased spiral fur, overlapping scale-like textures, tassel ornaments, and stylized cloud motifs. The fierce facial expressions, bulging eyes, exposed fangs, and animated posture exemplify the protective symbolism traditionally associated with Chinese guardian lions, long regarded as protectors of temples, homes, and sacred spaces.

The pair retains an attractive deep black to dark brown patinated surface with areas of natural wear revealing warm bronze highlights, enhancing their antique character. The removable heads remain functional, allowing access to the incense chambers.

Large and visually commanding, these bronzes make an exceptional statement in both traditional and contemporary interiors and represent fine examples of late Qing to early Republic decorative bronze casting.

Condition

Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear, minor rubbing to the patina, scattered oxidation, and light surface scratches consistent with over a century of use. Hinged heads operate properly. No significant structural damage noted.
