The piece measures 8 1/2" wide by 7" tall and just over 2" thick. There is a natural crack in the burl, plus some natural holes near the center of the piece. It reads, "Vemont (misspelled) 1958" at the lower right.

Schwarz worked in the American West, New York, and Vermont. In 1937 he was one of a number of illustrators living around Arlington, Vermont whose work was published in the Saturday Evening Post and other national publications.
William H. Schwarz was born in Syracuse, New York, on July 27, 1887. He was the son of Adolph H. Schulz, a prominent figure in the Syracuse community. His mother was Mary C. Tefft. After his early education in Syracuse, William H. Schwarz moved to New York City where, after study at a number of schools and academies including the Art Students League, he became a successful illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post where he illustrated articles by a number of prominent writers in all fields, including his award-winning illustrations for The Art Bogy by Gilbert Seldes, a well-known author and critic. less
