A good model of a young Spanish groom bracing for an intense ride on the uncontrollable Cobesse mare. It is after the model by Emmanuel de Santa Coloma that was inspired by Alfred de Dreux's painting of the Cobesse mare. The stable boy sets his jaw firmly and positions himself to win this battle of the wills, his entire posture countering the movements of the horse as she gallops wildly. Signed at front left corner in block script "SANTA COLOMA" and finished in a nuanced brown overall patina with burnished highlights.
