Exceptional large-scale Austin Productions abstract figurative sculpture by De César, signed and dated 1995, featuring two highly stylized faces merging together in a dramatic Surrealist composition.
The sculpture is an extraordinary study in positive and negative space, with sweeping biomorphic forms and multiple open cutouts creating an almost fluid relationship between the two figures. Their faces meet at the center of the composition while the surrounding forms twist, curve, and dissolve into one another, giving the piece a strong sense of movement and emotional tension.
Viewed from across a room, the sculpture reads almost architecturally. Up close, the elongated facial features and irregular open forms reveal a distinctly Surrealist quality that makes the work feel far more sculptural and experimental than most decorative Austin Productions pieces.
At 18 inches wide and nearly 17 inches tall, this is a substantial statement sculpture with considerable visual presence. It is cast in Austin Productions’ dense Durastone composition and weighs more than 10 pounds.
This example has been fully restored and refinished in a rich hammered metallic pewter finish. The deep-pigmented surface accentuates the sculptural contours and recessed facial details, while a heavy clear lacquer top coat provides a polished contemporary presentation. New felt has been added to the underside of the base.

De César appears to be a comparatively uncommon Austin Productions designer. Documented examples bearing the De César name are known from at least the early-to-mid 1990s, but relatively little biographical information about the artist appears to be readily available.
Any photographs showing furniture or additional décor are included only to demonstrate styling and scale. Only the sculpture is included with the purchase.
