Watercolor, ink, and oil on panel. Narrow plastic frame, painted by the artist to enhance the piece.
This is part of a series of paintings of Staghorn Sumac trees and leaves. I could paint hundreds of images of sumac, the shifting colors and twisting shapes of the individual leaves, the patterns that the branches of leaves make against the sky and overlaying each other, the variously arching forms of the branches and the trees themselves -- all so graceful and refined -- and tropical looking here in the northern U.S.
