Ridgway went to published documentation of the tracery patterns adorning the walls and ceilings of the thirteenth century Moorish palace in Granada as a design source for the "Alhambra" jug. These complex patterns constitute the chief ornament of the jug. By constructing a vessel with rows of flat facets, Ridgway's designers created the perfect format for the presentation of the Moorish panels, avoiding curves that would have created distortion.
