They are filled with sand and incense sticks are lit and placed in them. As a result of being outside the sand often gets wet. This censor has tiny holes in the feet consistent with wet sand being in contact with the base over many many decades (it takes a long long time for water to erode little holes in bronze!!). You can see the little pinprick holes when you look at the image of the tripod feet. Other than these age related pin holes in the feet the censor is in great condition with the engravings still being clearly visible less
