This Chinese hardwood carving, which dates back to 1850 in Jiangsu, was part of a Chinese marriage bed. It has three carvings in deep relief: on the two outer panels, a bouquet of flowers, and on the center, five characters within a court scene.
A 'foo dog' sits atop the left and right hand struts, offering protection against evil as the mythological guardians of Chinese culture. The carving originates from Nanjing - the capital of Jiangsu province and at one time China's capital during the Ming dynasty. It would make an attractive and interesting wall feature today.
